Typical Clinton Style
What? Mrs. Clinton going back on her word? Say it isn't so!
JASmius adds: Um, a little more detail might be in order:
1/25/2008
Statement by Senator Hillary Clinton on the Seating of Delegates at the Democratic National Convention“I hear all the time from people in Florida and Michigan that they want their voices heard in selecting the Democratic nominee.
“I believe our nominee will need the enthusiastic support of Democrats in these states to win the general election, and so I will ask my Democratic convention delegates to support seating the delegations from Florida and Michigan. I know not all of my delegates will do so and I fully respect that decision. But I hope to be President of all 50 states and U.S. territories, and that we have all 50 states represented and counted at the Democratic convention.
“I hope my fellow potential nominees will join me in this.
“I will of course be following the no-campaigning pledge that I signed, and expect others will as well.”
Of course she followed the no-campaigning pledge in Michigan and is following it in Florida. Why would she need to campaign if her far lesser-known rival (sorry, Barry, but outside the political junkie community, nobody knows ye. Oh, and screw you, Opie, you're getting what you deserve: humiliating obscurity.) doesn't campaign either? That leaves the deciding factor in those states her gargantuan advantage in name-recognition and Clintophilia amongst the nostaglic, vengeful Donk electorate.
And since she would scoop up a disproportionate number of Michigan delegates, and all of Florida's, why would she not want to have them seated at the convention after all? Can anybody really be surprised by this self-serving flip-flop?
Evidently so. Josh Marshall appears to be taking the same Clinton 101 course as Senator Obama:
The Clinton camp is just pushing to seat these delegates now because the contingencies of the moment mean that the decision would favor Hillary. She was the only one whose name was on the ballot in Michigan, thus insuring her win. She has a wide lead in every Florida poll taken this month.
Really, Josh? The spectre of La Clinton Nostra rigging your party's nominating process is dawning on you for the first time? Sure sounds like it. Tell me, pal, how does it feel to be a recipient of their stalinist tactics and not a cheerleader?
Even Michigan was a matter of her basically pulling a fast one on the other candidates by not taking her name off the ballot. Each of the major candidates signed a pledge not to "campaign or participate" in any primary or caucus prior to Feb. 5th except for Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. The other major candidates adopted what seems like the only reasonable interpretation of the pledge (see text here) and pulled their names from the ballot.
But then Hillary didn't, thus in essence guaranteeing her win in Michigan.
The Clinton campaign said taking her name off the ballot wasn't required by the pledge. But what can "participate" mean over and above "campaigning" other than formally being a candidate in the race?
{uncontrollable cynical laughter} Oh, my goodness, you just now figured out their maniacal word-parsing fetish, too? How can such a skullduggerous ilk as you and your fever swamp bottom-feeders possibly be such babe-in-the-woods naifs?
But all these particulars are secondary to the principle, which is that you don't change the rules in midstream to favor one candidate or another. This is no more than a replay, with different factual particulars, of the attempt to outlaw the at-large caucuses in Nevada after the Culinary Union endorsement made it appear they would help Barack Obama.
No, Josh, the principle is "Bill and Hillary Clinton get to do whatever it takes to win, and everybody else has to kiss their big, fat asses while they're doing it." When you realize that, you'll remember just who it is that owns the Democrat Party, lock, stock, and French ticklers.
I did tell y'all that the Empress would find chairs for her Michigan and Florida delegates. Now I'll tell youse guys something else: Josh Marshall will be walking through flaming walls of rabid rattlesnakes next fall to get Hillary Clinton elected the forty-fourth president of the United States; the black voters that Hillary Clinton is "alienating" by her racist tactics against Barack Obama will turn out for her in record numbers; and Obama himself will do what he's told and take the veep slot on Hillary Clinton's ticket.
This overhyped "Donk civil war" is just a show to keep the Loony Left from dozing off in a fit of boredom. Once Her Nib is their nominee, they'll all close ranks like the Borg drones they are, and march as one toward the assimilation of America, right over the top of any hapless Republican that tries to stand in their way.
Including the one whom Bill Clinton did no favors with this comment:
Campaigning in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Friday, the former president brushed aside suggestions his wife would prove to be a divisive nominee for the Democratic Party, pointing out how she has successfully worked with Republicans in the Senate — including one of the current GOP presidential candidates.
“She and John McCain are very close,” Clinton said. “They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history, and they’re afraid they’d put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other.”
Sick Willie makes it sound like Darth Queeg would take a dive for her. Which he probably would. So shouldn't libs be trying to build McCain up with the GOP electorate instead of so viciously damning him with this outwardly-apparent faint praise? Or do they consider Mitt Romney to be easier pickings and are deliberately trying to sabotage the Arizona "maverick" instead?
If the latter, the expression "too clever by half" comes to mind.
