Fickle
Dontcha wish the Dems could make up their minds how they feel about obstructionism? Fourteen years ago when the GOP was blocking HillaryCare en route to a rout in the 1994 midterms, they LOATHED it. Over the course of the first six years of the Bush Administration when they were extraconstitutionally shafting Dubya by filibustering his appellate court nominations, they defended it as the very fabric out of which the Republic was constructed. Now that they're back in power and eager to nationalize whole sectors of the U.S. economy, and the Republicans won't completely jump out of the way on command like trained seals, they think it sucks again:
As with the Clintons' attempted health care putsch a decade and a half ago, the GOP is, belatedly, coming to recognize that the inevitable chickens of the environmental extremism they've been petrified of challenging for years - runaway energy prices - are coming home to roost, and while they deprived themselves of the standing to shout "We told you so!" due to their chronic cowardice, they can still backfill and, in the process, gain pole position on a wedge issue that could blunt, or even turn back, the tsunami-like Donk tide in the 2008 election cycle.
This is where having an actual Republican as the Republican presidential nominee would have been immensely helpful. But clearly the Donks recognize the recurrence of a pattern that does not favor them. And the GOP didn't need a presidential candidate heading the ticket to kick ass in '94.
This time 'round, I'd settle for breaking even. Otherwise, obstructing Obamanation will be all but impossible.
