Last Call For Vengeance
Whether you attribute tonight's results to the "six year itch" or the war that President Bush said from the beginning would be a long one or any of the myriad of Democrat memes throughout the year, the bottom line is that the American electorate has made some profoundly foolish and short-sighted choices the consequences of which will not be long in manifesting themselves beginning in January. A huge tax increase is a certainty without any legislative action at all from the new House majority by virtue of letting the Bush tax cuts expire. Pulling the plug on the war, both through bitterly recriminatory hearings that feed Bush lieutenants backwards through the bunghole on everything from terrorist surveillance to "torture" of enemy "detainees" and outright defunding of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan is inevitable. And leave us not forget what will be the first order of business for Crazy Speaker Pelosi: the double impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
-Me, 11/7/06
Imagine my surprise when the first order of business of the 110th Congress was NOT the double-impeachment of Dubya and Big Time. It wasn't even the immediate defunding of the war on terror. Rather, it was the confirmation of General David Petraeus as commander of the Iraqi theatre of operations, and the "Surge" strategy along with him that has succeeded in crushing al Qaeda and Iran's Shiite proxy forces.
Sure, the Dems didn't have the numbers in the Senate to actually remove any Bushie from office. With the three dozen or so "blue dog" Dems, they couldn't even be entirely sure of being able to pass a single impeachment article out of the House. But rationality had nothing to do with it for the extremist Donk base; it was all about revenge. Revenge for Bill Clinton's impeachment, revenge for the foiling of Al Gore's attempt to steal the 2000 election, and a whole lot of sour grapes for all the reverses the Democrats suffered over the next six years.
Astonishingly, however, the Dem Politburo would have none of it. Speakerette Funbags has maintained for a year and a half that impeachment was "off the table". Most likely because (1) Bush is a lame duck and (2) futiley attempting to topple him a few months in advance of when he'd be leaving office anyway would accomplish nothing other than to re-energize the GOP grassroots right in time for the November election.
There is a caveat, though. To the degree that an attempted impeachment ever made sense in this Congress, it would have been way back in January of 2007. Which, of course, is why I predicted it on Election night 2006. Surely if impeachment has been "off the table" up until now, it's dead & buried, right?
Wrong, Depends-breath:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has dropped a bombshell by reversing course and suggesting that the Judiciary Committee might take up the issue of impeaching President Bush.
Pelosi’s change of heart comes after Representative Dennis Kucinich moved a “privileged resolution” to force the House to consider whether Bush should be impeached for, according to the Ohio Democrat, lying to Congress and the American people about the reasons for invading Iraq.
Pelosi had previously declared impeachment to be “off the table” before the 2006 election. But she now believes hearings on the impeachment issue are “a distinct possibility,” according to The Nation magazine.
Pelosi told reporters on Thursday: “My expectation is that there will be some review of that in the committee. This is a Judiciary Committee matter, and I believe we will see some attention being paid to it by the Judiciary Committee.”...
What say you, Hard Starboard nation? A full-blown star chamber show trial push to put Dubya into the same club of infamy as Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton? Or has Pelosi tossed Kucinich a symbolic but empty bone and simply chosen a different place to bury this unrequited nutroot wet dream?
My guess is the latter, seeing as how even the most expedited impeachment inquiry reasonably possible would dominate the general election campaign - thus incensing the GOP base, turning off independents, and jeopardizing the vast gains the Dems stand to make - and probably wouldn't be concluded until after Election Day at the earliest. Not to mention that I cannot believe any lefty wants to run the slightest even hypothetical risk of putting Dick Cheney in the Oval Office for any length of time.
Rational arguments, all. But the Left's psychopathic hatred of George W. Bush has never been rational. And we don't call her "Crazy Nancy" for nothing.
Makes me wonder what Senator Obama thinks of this idea, seeing as he would seem to be the Donk most affected by it - in the short and long term, (if you catch my drift). Pity we'll never get a straight answer if anybody ever bothers to ask him the question.
