Night Shift @ ACORN (9/22/09)

Governor Dead-Man-Walking cuts off the Shady Oak:

In another blow to ACORN, Governor Paterson put a hold Friday on all state contracts with the embattled anti-poverty agency.

Paterson’s budget director and director of state operations ordered agencies not to move forward on contracts with the group.

The hold will stay in place during a thirty-day review of $400,000 worth of state contracts with ACORN and its parent, New York Agency for Community Affairs.

And at the end of the thirty-day review they'll climb to the top of the bunker, release a pigeon, and if it doesn't immediately flash into flames, the hold on ACORN contracts will be lifted.  If it does, back down into the bunker they'll go.

THIS is the interesting part:

NY ACORN President Pat Boone said he has no problem with Paterson’s move.

“We welcome the governor’s review and are confident he will find that every state dollar we’ve received went directly to combating New York’s foreclosure crisis and helping tens of thousands of low-income New Yorkers access the Earned Income Tax Credit,” Boone said.

Pat Boone?  PAT BOONE?  Oh, sure, not THAT Pat Boone.  But I gotta think this guy has changed his name in the past few days from either Guido Sarducci, Theotis Williams, or Pedro De Pacas.

Still, "Boone" could be a Masterpiece Theatre host compared to that radical buffoon Bertha Lewis.  For all we know he could be as armpit-deep in ACORN criminal feces as the growing sting lineup.  But he seems at least to understand the maxim of knowing when to stop digging one's own grave.  Just the realization that Godbama has not yet, after all, managed to end politics as we know it would be a step in the right direction.

So don't stop doubling down, Bertha!  You go, girl!  You'll beat those crackers yet.

It is not, however, getting any easier for the Head Nut:

Jerrold "Nad"ler {snicker}.  I know I keep asking this question, but where does the Left GET these people?

In "Nad"ler's case, he seems determined to live up to his surname:

Nadler has done his best to avoid fulfilling his promise to Representative John Conyers (D-MI). On the House floor, he decried the Issa amendment barring funds from ACORN as an unconstitutional “bill of attainder,” which demonstrates Nadler’s ignorance as well as his obstinance.  A bill of attainder creates a judgment of criminal or civil guilt by Congress rather than by a jury, making justice a political battle, which is why the founders were smart enough to proscribe the practice from the very start of the republic.

Congress has every right, however, to determine where it will and will not spend its money.  ACORN is not entitled to federal funding, and Congress can halt funds to it at any time its members so desire.  Such a finding does not carry a legal weight of conviction for violations, and indeed Congress doesn’t necessarily need to justify itself along those lines.  In fact, it would be the height of irresponsibility to allow taxpayer funds to go to an organization that had been caught on tape in several locations and instances giving advice on how to commit crimes and cover them up, including evasion of the very taxes that allow ACORN’s funding in the first place.

But "Nad"ler and his misbegotten party aren't about "responsibility".  As the August recess toxically and spectacularly illustrated, Democrats don't see themselves as accountable TO the voters, but as overlords towering over them, dictating each and every aspect of their lives "for their own good."  Their achilles heel is that they don't quite yet have total power, and so are sorely dependent upon Marxist criminal syndicates like ACORN to subvert the electoral process for their benefit.  It's an incestuous relationship that would make even Juan Carlos Vera exclaim, "¡Ay, caramba!"  If, you know, he wasn't already part of it.

Another way of putting it is that "Nad"ler is an idiot.  You know the old saying: If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself:

Conyers and House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank of Massachusetts asked the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service today to provide an analysis on several aspects of ACORN, including any current or previous criminal investigations into the group; a breakdown of any funding received by the group and any violations of the terms of that funding; a report on alleged improprieties in collecting voter registration forms and “the extent … that resulted in people being improperly placed on voting roles and actually attempting to vote,” and the group’s programs to provide housing opportunities.

It also asked for a report on private sting activities “in which individuals have reportedly visited ACORN offices, misrepresented their identities and proposed activities, surreptitiously videotaped resulting conversations with ACORN workers, and widely distributed them.”

The letter went onto say, “Conflicting allegations have been made about the propriety of these activities. Please research and report on the federal and state laws that could apply to such videotaping and distribution of conversations without the consent of all parties.”

False moral equivalence.  Pretend to investigate the criminal syndicate that aids and abetts tax evasion, child prostitution, and human trafficking, while squashing the journalists who exposed them like insects.

I sure wish Conyers' and Frank's Republican predecessors had applied the same justice to President Bush and Dan Rather and his crew five years ago.

Well, if ACORN's federally-subsidized fiscal milking machine is going to be confiscated until its time-out is over, I suppose it stands to reason that they wouldn't waste any time bombarding the fruited plain with rusty tin cups:

Dear John ,

I know I speak for everyone at ACORN when I tell you that we are humbled by the outpouring of support, and we are deeply grateful.

I have an exciting update to share with you. An anonymous donor has offered to match all new donations to ACORN — dollar-for-dollar — up to $20,000.

There will never be a more important moment to donate to ACORN — we are in the fight of our lives. And now, when you donate, your gift will be worth TWICE as much, up to $20,000.

Thank you for everything you do to help people in need,

– Bertha Lewis

Here's the message.  Suffice it to say that on the American Left, shame isn't rare, nor is it endangered - it's bleeping extinct.
