Senate Dems Are Doomed

.....presuming, of course, that they continue on their current politically suicidal - or perhaps that should be fratricidal - course (via J-Ger):

Democratic attempts to knock off the two GOP incumbents who might be vulnerable — Senators David Vitter in Louisiana and Richard Burr in North Carolina — appear to be slim and diminishing. It's not very likely that many Republican incumbents will lose re-election in the South these days. If Vitter behaves himself and Burr very visibly hits every county a couple times in the next year, Democrats have virtually no chance in either state. Basically, there is a real chance that Democrats won't flip any GOP Senate seats. This is not — repeat, not — to say that Democrats can't pick up any Republican seats, but their chances certainly aren't what they used to be.

At the same time, things look very tough for Democrats in three toss-up races: Neither Senator Christopher Dodd in Connecticut nor Majority Leader Harry Reid in Nevada is polling well, and the GOP has a chance in the Illinois open seat contest. Appointed Senator Michael Bennet in Colorado and party-switcher Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania have to deal with formidable primary challenges before they can even get to what are likely to be tough general election campaigns. In California, it's unclear how tough the re-election challenge will be for Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer. The biggest question there is whether Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, is ready for prime time politics. Finally, add to that list Senator Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas, who is looking more and more vulnerable, despite a lack of name-brand competition.

That's seven Democratic Senate seats in real danger, and that doesn't include the Delaware open seat if GOP Representative Michael Castle runs, or if Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in New York faces a top-drawer challenger.

Such as former three-term Governor George Pataki, who would be at least even odds to unseat her.

That's as many as NINE Dem Senate seats that stand to turn "red" next fall.  A mirror reversal of 2008 plus "Snarlin' Arlen" Specter's welcome defection.  And why the hell not?  They ran the Senate table on us the last two cycles.  When the pendulum swings that far out of whack, it swings right back with at least equal severity.

As we've documented elsewhere today, the Donks really aren't helping themselves, though of course they THINK they are:

Four Democratic senators have introduced a bill that would, if passed, repeal the legal immunity afforded the telecommunications industry for their participation in President George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program.

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Russ Feingold (D-WI), and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) announced the measure Monday. In a release, they said the bill “eliminates retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies that allegedly participated in President Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program.”

The four senators, all liberal Democrats, emphasized that they believed granting the industry immunity violated the law and due process.

The GOP 2010 campaign ad copy almost writes itself: "The Democrat Party: punishing patriotism, paying back the terrorists":

I gotta hand one thing to the Dems: they're all a bunch of worthless animals, but they DO have the most impeccable sense of PR timing these days.  And a year from now there will be dramatically fewer of them in both houses of Congress, which is about the most patriotic act those of them cleaned out will ever commit.
