"Dangerously Authoritarian"
After the ObamaCare jamdown, after instructing the EPA to outlaw carbon dioxide, after EOing offshore oil exploration into oblivion, is it really so far-fetched to fret that King Hussein might just bypass Congress again and decree blanket Obamnesty?:
Several Senators have learned of a possible plan by the Obama Administration that would provide a mass Amnesty for the nation’s 11-18 million illegal aliens. Led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), eight Senators addressed a letter to the President asking for answers to questions about a plan that would allow DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to provide an amnesty if they can’t secure enough votes for a bill in the Senate.
The letter that was sent to President Obama earlier today asks the President for clarification on the use of deferred action or parole for illegal aliens. The executive actions are typically used in special cases and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but if sixty votes can’t be secured in the Senate to pass a mass Amnesty, the Administration may use the discretionary actions as an alternative.
Eeyore dismisses the possibility out of hand:
A mass amnesty of millions of illegals is a different ballgame, and if done by fiat would strike me as being … oh, what’s the term? Ah yes: Political suicide. Yeah, granted, after promising Latinos the sun, the moon, and the stars on immigration, Democrats are desperate to make a move on amnesty. But they’re also keenly aware of how popular Arizona’s law is...If Obama slammed his fist down on the national immigration chessboard by granting some sort of blanket legalization, not only would border enforcers go berserk but it would cement the narrative that his statist ambition has become dangerously authoritarian and desperately requires checking by a GOP Congress. The Republican wave would become a Republican tsunami, which means even if he wanted to do it, the politics are simply too poisonous to allow it.
To which my retort is one highly representative word: ObamaCare. And cap & trade, which he's extorting Congress to pass in the post-election lame duck session by letting Armus completely swamp the Gulf of Mexico. And the lawsuit he's having Eric The Red launch against Arizona's immigration law despite the pleas of Democrats there to refrain lest they be destroyed in the inevitable November backlash. And on and on and on. Ruling in "dangerously authoritarian" fashion flagrantly against the majority wishes of the American people has been Barack Obama's MO from day one. Sure, he knows that his domestic communization agenda is hugely unpopular. He just doesn't care. He knew he was casting this Donk majority to the four winds when he used Crazy Nancy to bully enough Blue Dogs to commit, yes, political suicide and vote to pass O-Care. But in his mind, he was sacrificing five dozen or so House seats and eight to ten Senate seats now for permanent Donk hegemony in the long run.
And instrumental in said hegemony is....Obamnesty. And if he can't get it out of this Congress - and he won't - there's every reason to believe he'll do it by Executive Order, consequences be damned.
Eeyore is exhibiting the standard failure of Republican imagination where Democrat extremism and underhandedness is concerned. The GOP to this day still inhabits a fantasy world where both parties are reasonable and "mainstream" and voluntarily play by the same rules. The reality is that Dems don't just not play by the SAME rules, they don't play by any rules at all. They're not "opponents" or "colleagues" to be worked and gotten along with, they're political enemies in a political war. To me, it's astonishing that there were as many as eight Republican Senators who signed onto that letter.
Remember one other thing while you're at it: Don't think that this Obamnesty EO would be the end of his dictatorial ambitions. If he is considering legalizing twelve million passive Mexican invaders by imperial decree because he can't get a bill doing it for him out of THIS Congress, doesn't that make a de facto presidential coup de tat highly likely in the next one?
There will, in other words, be a lot more decrees where this one comes from. The real question is, will a restored Republican Congress "go to war" to stop his authoritarian rampage?
