Pretend He Never Supported Tax Cuts? Check

I'll ask the question yet again: Why is Sorry Charlie becoming a Democrat piecemeal?:

Charlie Crist is continuing his campaign to say and do anything to win an election by removing from his website all mention of supporting the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts.  As the debate rages in Washington over whether to make these cuts permanent to provide some economic certainty to taxpayers and small business owners to help create jobs, Crist is continuing to move closer and closer to the Democrat establishment in Washington, D.C., by erasing statements from his website such as “Charlie Crist supports making the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent.”

See, I'm not challenging the strategic logic of Crist's campaign choices.  He wasn't going to win the Republican senatorial primary, and the Democrat field is a joke, so the opening was there to be plumbed.  The moral logic is non-existent, and his hardcore mercenary streak would alienate at least as many voters as it might attract, but pragmatically it was the only option remaining to him.

What I don't get is his tactical logic.  Why this drip-drip-drip across the issue spectrum approach?  It's providing weekly reminders that he's a backstabbing prick whom NOBODY can trust.  Are RINOs and independents really going to opt for precisely the sort of turd-in-every-pocket, me-me-me pol that has become almost universally loathed in this cycle over a man they may not necessarily agree with on everything but who embodies the WYSIWYG principle?

Put another way, Sorry Charlie's betrayal of his former party and slow-motion Democratization is becoming the issue, all the moreso since he doesn't appear to have any policy position that he won't throw overboard if he thinks it'll con a few more votes.

I can see Dems going for him out of a lack of any other viable alternatives, but I just can't picture Charlie Crist as a coalescing point for the sort of broad coalition with Republicans and Independents that he would need as a [heh] "independent".  The scrutiny of the fall campaign will just pick it - and the Tuna candidacy - apart.
