The Genesis Of Unpopularity
I keep ignoring these Obamedia laments of why the American people are no longer dancing around Barack Obama's golden statue like nuts, and they keep showing up anyway, so I guess I've got to throw in my two bits (hyperinflation, dontcha know) so we can all move on.
What explains this paradox? How should we understand the fate of a president and a party who have been relatively successful at passing their agenda, yet don’t seem to be enjoying an electoral bounce?
The quick answer is, of course, jobs.
With the unemployment rate over 9%, many Americans are unhappy and scared. But there is more to it than that.
Several factors have lined up to put the president in this spot.
The first factor has to do with President Obama’s decision to focus on controversial issues that he felt were important to the nation, even if they were not the most beneficial issues for his party. In other words, Obama selected issues such as health care and financial regulation that were sure to stimulate conservative opposition and cause concern among moderates.
At the same time, the president is a pragmatic politician who has been willing to cut deals to survive a notoriously difficult legislative process. In making those compromises, he has often angered many of his supporters on the left. The strategy of going big, yet doing so through big compromises, has resulted in an energized conservative movement, uneasy independent voters and a frustrated liberal base.
Nice try, Julian. And I'll give you some credit for not bellowing, "REPENT, SINNERS!!!" and otherwise dousing us in profane invective about "ingratitude" and "blasphemy" and so forth. But the explanation is really very simple when you abandon the risible premise that the problem with Barack Obama's unpopularity does not rest with Barack Obama.
Ready now? Okay, here it is: Barack Obama spent the entire 2008 campaign posing as a tabula rasa of hype, idolatry, and gaseous platitudes that, with ample Obamedia assistance, camouflaged his radical background, radical present, and utter incompetence for the job he was seeking. He spend the seven weeks between the detonation of the Democrat Financial Logic Bomb and Election Day saying virtually nothing, other than the occasional "I am a pragmatic, post-partisan, post-racial centrist with superlative judgment." He has spent every single day since ruling as a corrupt, lying, arrogant, authoritarian, Marxist-Alinskyist tinpot carpet bombing a country already reeling from the Panic of 2008 with nationalization of entire industrial sectors like cars, health care, banks, with energy on the auction block next, as well as an avalanche of debt, none of which the majority of the voters who hung the chad for him ever saw coming or even imagined.
What a shock that independents have turned against The One in droves, and Republicans are ready to crawl through flaming walls of rabid rattlesnakes, and intimidate any Black Panther gang banger who gets in their way, to vote this November. It's called "buyer's remorse" mixed with a healthy dose of righteous indignation.
The rest of Zelizer's "analysis" is irrelevant. Any president who enjoys 3-2 margins in both Houses of Congress SHOULD be able to ram his agenda through on partisan votes. The agenda B.O. rammed through appealed only to his hard-left base, and flipped the bird at everyone else. And if the nutters don't think Hogzilla or O-Care or cripple & tax were/are uberleft enough, where are they going to go?
The Li'l President short-sheeted his own political bed by design in order to institutionally bulldoze America permanently to the extreme Left. The next two years will determine whether it was a move shrewd and diabolical, or Carterism on steroids.
