The Necromonger Vapors Cometh

Dear Fellow Conservative:

Sharron Angle has been the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Nevada for less than a month but Harry Reid is already on the attack, working to portray her as far-right extremist. Here's the latest report from the Associated Press:

Reid wasted no time trying to cement that image in Nevada, unleashing an ad within days of Angle's primary victory that depicts her as a heartless extremist who would slash Social Security and Medicare for the elderly.

The narrator asks, "What's next?"

That ominous tag line, Reid advisers suggest, will be a constant refrain as the Democrat spends his campaign budget — on track toward $25 million and expected to overwhelm what Angle can muster — to turn voters against her.

Harry Reid knows that Sharron Angle will protect Social Security and will do nothing to change benefits for those in or near retirement. But he also knows he will lose if he doesn't scare seniors. That's why he's going to do everything he can to make voters think Sharron Angle is an extremist.

Well, I have a message for the Majority Leader:

There is nothing extreme about balancing our nation's budget.

There is nothing extreme about stopping earmarks and kick-backs.

There is nothing extreme about banning bailouts.

And there is nothing extreme about reforming entitlements.

What is extreme is for a Senator to always think government is the answer — a habit that has racked up $13 trillion in debt.

What is extreme is for a Senator to use earmarks to buy votes and to micromanage local decisions from Washington.

What is extreme is for a Senator to reward failing corporations and to force American taxpayers to foot the bill.

And what is truly extreme is for a United States Senator to vote against efforts to stop Congress from raiding Social Security for other government programs.

But that's exactly what Harry Reid did — not once, not twice, and not even three times... but six times!!

I know this because I offered several of these amendments to protect Social Security from politicians who want to steal your retirement to pay for their pet projects. You can see the roll call votes here, here, here, here, here, and here.

The fact is that Harry Reid is the one who is a threat to Social Security and Medicare because for years he has fought against attempts to reform them and now they're going broke.
