Fram Politics
If you're, say, forty or older, you probably remember this 1981 commercial:
I'm going to go way out on a limb and assume that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie remembers it as well as we do:
| N.J. Governor Christie: You may hate me now, but ten years from now you'll be sending me a thank you note |
It's an approach that wilts the faint of heart, but it brings surprising results:
| N.J. Governor Christie stops in Hollywood to campaign for GOP nominee Meg Whitman |
And Lefties don't like it at all, because they are more acutely aware of it than anybody:
Eeyore raises not an unfair point that while Double-C's intervention with the heckler was pure red-meat, it also stepped all over Meg Whitman's chance to do her own ass-kicking. It WAS her event, after all, not the Big Man's. Given that her poll numbers versus Jerry "Retread" Brown have slipped in the past week or two, this would have been a great PR moment for Meg to bitch-slap this asshole.
But maybe she wouldn't have. Maybe she'd have gotten a deer-in-the-headlights expression and it'd have been a PR disaster instead. And maybe Governor Christie's pugnacious aura will rub off on her. Which I take to be at least a significant portion of the reason for inviting him to her rally.
Ace said it well:
I really can't overstate how important Christie is. Christie, plus the Tea Party. It's one thing to vote against Democrats. But Christie, and the Tea Party, offer an affirmative reason to vote Republican, the hope that this isn't going to be business as usual.
The fact that Christie's a hit is crucial for weak-kneed poll-obsessed Republican clockwatchers and goldbrickers. You cannot trust people to do the right thing. You can only trust them to do what is in their interest.
And for those who question Double-C on moral issues, question no longer.
Who says you can't attack on social issues via the fiscal backdoor? They are, ultimately, all part of the same rotten structure. And Chris Christie is leading the way in kicking it down.
