Helping Our Children Learn

“Every student learns exactly the same way.” Do you believe that statement? It is hard for anyone to swallow, no matter how much sugar you add.

And yet this is how our public education system operates. The result? Generations of students being deprived of a good education. One future at a time. I am going to tell you how we can begin to change the status quo.

Here in Washington, our options are even more limited than in some states. We don’t have vouchers, and we don’t have charter schools. What we have is a public education system buried in layers of bureaucracy and a statewide teacher union that does a great job advocating its own interests and standing in the way of kids learning.

Yet in the midst of all this doom and gloom, Washington is actually on the cutting edge of something! This something has the potential to turn public education on its head—for the better.

This something is online public schooling. Online learning is taking off in the United States and around the world. Online schools are creating extraordinary success stories as they leverage the latest innovative technologies to meet unique student needs. For the academically advanced and those who struggle, kids with cancer and competitive athletes, online education offers solutions for students’ diverse learning and life needs.

I want you to be one of the first people to know that this week the Freedom Foundation’s iLearn Project is launching an exciting new web series exploring virtual education in our state. We’ll not only spotlight some of the leaders state and nationwide (like former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Washington-based entrepreneur Tom Vander Ark), we’re also going to introduce you to Breon, Jaden, Destiny, Francine, Ryan, and others. These are the students whose lives have been changed by online public education. Watch the first episode by clicking on the video link above.

With so much to offer, online learning is rocking the boat of the status quo. It’s only a matter of time before education statists target online options for elimination or regulation. The bottom line: These options will only remain available if families and other citizens defend them.

First of all, people need to know online public education is available to every student in the state Washington—at no extra cost. Secondly, they need to know that protecting online public education means more choices for every child—no matter where or how they choose to go to school. And more choice means more freedom—for everyone. We’re excited to tell the story of online public education, the story of something gone right.

But don’t take my word for it. Watch the first episode now and stay tuned as we introduce Washington’s pioneers of virtual education. You can also read student stories at www.iLearnProject.com.

I know you care about helping every student get the best education possible, just like me. Would you partner with us as we unleash the potential of online education? You don't have to donate a $1,000 check (not that it wouldn't be appreciated) or climb a mountain to make a difference. You can help by simply sharing this video with 10 other people. Who do you know that need to learn about online public schooling? Will you take the time to share this video with them now?

Thank you for helping advance freedom by promoting more educational choices for every child!

Sincerely,

Diana Cieslak
