Doin' What Dictators Do
I've made this observation many times over the recent months, and I'll make it again: From Barack Obama on down, the Democrat Party has nothing to say. They have nothing to run on. Their extreme Left agenda has been one unbroken line of disasters, from Hogzilla, nationalizing GM and Chrysler and student loans and the mortgage industry, to ObamaCare, to FinReg, to their attempts at cutting off domestic access to affordable energy resources with cap & tax and censoring center-right political speech with DISCLOSE, and of course doing nothing about averting the looming and catastrophic 2011 tax increases. The Li'l President has embarrassed and weakened the U.S. abroad, and cynically tried to exploit the one domestic crisis he faced (Armus) for political gain instead of trying to solve the immediate problem in the best interests of ALL Americans. His polling is dwindling to Hasselhoff numbers and he's taking his party down with him in the midterms, and they know it.
So....what can they say? What else? They do what comes naturally to them: fearmongering and smears. Even after encountering counterfire from their own media allies, they are undauntedly determined to keep slandering the conservative groups as doing what Organizing for America was doing just two short years ago:
Where are the curly mustaches on Gillespie and Rove? I was half expecting to hear, "I'm Snidely Whiplash, and I approve this message. MWA HA HA HA HA" at the end of the spot. It's risible. It's embarrassing. It's echo chamber syndrome run amok. But it also reveals the collective bunker psychology of the Messianic palace guard these days: They don't think "foreign money" flowing into American political campaigns is evil; they think their enemies turning their own tactics against them is - especially when they're not. They have no proof, but in their minds they don't NEED proof, because it's OBVIOUS that's what's going on, which is why Axelrod retorted to Bob Schiefer's incredulous "Is this the best you can do?" with the defiant demand that the Chamber of Commerce prove its innocence. Obamunists justify political "total war" by the ludicrously satanic comic book caricatures they construct of the center-right and then demand that we prove we're not like that - to which the bar of proof would be set unreachably high.
Nothing all that out of the ordinary for the Democrat Party, really. What is novel is the fact that the hatchetry is not being filtered through surrogates, whose job the politics of personal destruction usually is. It's being directly quarterbacked by President Post-Partisan Centrist Unifier himself. And more and more of those aforementioned media allies are noticing - and rebelling:
Here is what’s so appalling to me: The ad makes the totally unsubstantiated charge that the Chamber of Commerce is taking money from foreign interests and using it to “steal our democracy.” And worse, President Obama is out on the campaign trail, according to the New York Times, creating an echo chamber by making the same reckless claims just as the ad hits the airwaves. And when CBS newsman Bob Schieffer Sunday asks David Axelrod if there is any proof for the claim, the senior Obama aide says they don’t need proof — it’s up to the Chamber of Commerce to prove it isn’t true.
The Democratic National Commitee [sic] is using the same sort of tactic and logic that Senator Joe McCarthy used in the 1950s: Level a headline-grabbing and unsubstantiated charge, like the State Department is filled with communists, and then say it is up to the State Department and the employees so charged to prove it is not true.
So much for hope and change; this is the politics of fear, slander and divisiveness on the eve of an election that looks as if it could deliver a damning verdict on the first two years of the Obama administration.
Behold, another Obamedian that actually bought all the bullshit 2008 hype. Whaddaya think of your "god" now, asshole?
It's the political equivalent of the Frankenstein metaphor: Democrats embraced and shoved onto the country in 2008 a monster, a wolf in sheep's clothing, a partisan divider, an anti-democrat (small "d"), an experienceless, leadershipless demagogue who can only stay on top by destroying everything and everyone around him. A fact we voices in the wilderness pointed out on a daily basis on his depressingly meteoric rise, and for which they will take the corresponding fall:
Some Democrats on Capitol Hill worry that the White House is going too far in charging that the politically powerful business lobby may be using foreign money to fuel its election efforts. The charge ignites strong feelings among job-hungry voters. But Democrats are concerned that it may be overstated and could harm moderate Democrats in swing districts…
“The White House may reap the whirlwind,” said one top Democratic staffer. “What are we going to do next year if a Republican Congress is making baseless claims about President Obama? We’ll want the media to hold them accountable to the facts and the evidence.”
Translation: Stop exaggerating the projection now, or there might not be enough left of us to carry that water for you next year, which means you might not be here two years after that.
Presidents are supposed to soar above the fray, not wade through the bloody trenches. The past year and a half has pariahized The One amongst independents, to the point where almost half of his original coalition of support has now turned against him. That's "brand" erosion that is not [ahem] "sustainable," and enormously more difficult to rebuild even for a True Believer who isn't going out of his way to bludgeon his enemies in the balls with a sledghammer.
It's also an admission of something else - the complete impotence of this White House:
The Li'l President and his henchmen are using the guise of intimidation, but what this really is underneath all the blustering artifice is plaintive begging that the CoC help the Regime destroy them. They have neither the legal grounds nor the political clout to bully the Chamber into giving up its donor lists for hostile partisan inspection, any congressional probe that started in the Lame Duck ambush would get terminated forthwith by the new Republican majority in January, and Darryl Issa is drenching himself in drool anticipating the abuse of the IRS to go after the conservative groups Red Barry is smearing today.
What does a dictator wannabe who lives for power do after seizing it all and then losing it just as quickly? Exit quotation from Ed Gillespie via Eeyore:
“This kind of rhetoric and behavior only reinforces the idea that [Obama] is not up for the office.”
