Glub, Glub
I heard about the Obama Regime's blindingly hypocritical smear of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce last week for [drumroll please] mining millions in illegal foreign campaign contributions on Glenn Beck's radio show last Thursday, but didn't have time to blog about it (my having been doing two jobs at the office for the past month and all). It being so, well, blindingly hypocritical, as well as stupendously baseless and evidenceless, it almost seemed not worth the time, assuming I had had any. Although, in all honesty, I wouldn't have cared all that much if it had been true, because I've never believed in unilateral disarmament, pre-emptive or otherwise.
Regardless, the despicable accusation has been shot down in flames - and you'll never believe by whom:
White House officials acknowledged Friday that they had no specific evidence to indicate that the chamber had used money from foreign entities to finance political attack ads.
“The president was not suggesting any illegality,” Bob Bauer, the White House counsel, said. Instead, he said Mr. Obama’s reference to the chamber was meant to draw attention to the inadequacies of campaign disclosure laws in allowing groups to spend large amounts of money on politics without disclosing their donors.
White House officials called on the chamber to go beyond current disclosure laws and establish that no foreign money has been used in its political campaigns. “They can put this to rest,” said Joshua Earnest, a White House spokesman. “They have the keys to the file cabinet.”
Ensign Ed calls this a backpedal, but I don't think it really is. "Stepping back" would not include a continued underlying threat against the USCoC if it doesn't comply with the White House's "request" to "voluntarily" go "above and beyond" current disclosure laws. The (first) obvious retort is, "And if we don't.....?" It seems pretty clear from the Grey Hag debunking of The One's slander that the charge by itself isn't doing any PR damage. So what possible reason would the Chamber have to play the designatedly villainous role Barry O would have it play by going along with such a travesty? No, keeds, there's still menace in play here; the Regime has just put a velvet glove over the brass knucks.
The other obvious retort is, "You first, Barry," since it was never much of a secret that a huge portion of the billion smackers that deluged his '08 campaign coffers came from "undisclosed foreign sources". Or "Physician, healeth thyself of thine log in thine own eye before gougingeth out our moteless ones."
Ed also calls it McCarthyite tyranny, which bullseyes the target and wipes it out. But it's like what Uncle Ben told Peter Parker at the beginning of the Spiderman saga: "With great power comes great responsibility". It's the difference between governing and campaigning, between being a statesman and being a thug.
And guess what, folks? Even the Obamedia isn't bothering to hide it anymore:
Barack Obama is being politically crushed in a vise. From above, by elite opinion about his competence. From below, by mass anger and anxiety over unemployment. And it is too late for him to do anything about this predicament until after November’s elections.
With the exception of core Obama administration loyalists, most politically engaged elites have reached the same conclusions: the White House is in over its head, isolated, insular, arrogant and clueless about how to get along with or persuade members of Congress, the media, the business community or working-class voters. This view is held by Fox News pundits, executives and anchors at the major old-media outlets, reporters who cover the White House, Democratic and Republican congressional leaders and governors, many Democratic business people and lawyers who raised big money for Obama in 2008, and even some members of the administration just beyond the inner circle.
Translation: Success has a thousand fathers, but failure is an orphan. All these people who are leaping off the Obamunist bandwagon leaped onto it in the first place because they saw B.O. as a means to their own power and wealth ends, just as he saw them the same way. And they were with him all the way until he stopped serving their purposes - or right about now, as the deafening roar of the looming, Party-crushing wave can no longer be denied without getting swept away by it.
Oh, and "make no mistake," all these long-knife-bearers didn't just wake up this morning and discover to their stunned indignation the arrogant, imperious, callow, thin-skinned, tyrannical greenhorn False Messiah has always been. They knew he was all hype and no substance, all sizzle and no steak, all hat and no cattle. But he was their meteoric, lightning-in-a-bottle, once in a generation chance to finally break through the "50/50 nation" gridlock and conquer "Jesusland" once and for all. And considerable, although still incomplete, "progress" was made toward that end.
Now the Left has decided that Barack Obama is a casualty of Operation Amerikan Tyranny, and they've evidently deemed him expendable. And the punchline is that his titanic ego will keep him from ever realizing it:
Throughout the year, we have been treated to Obama-led attacks on George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Congressman Joe Barton (for his odd apology to BP), John Boehner (for seeking the speakership — or was it something about an ant?) and Fox News (for everything). Suitable Democratic targets in some cases, perhaps, but not worth the time of a busy Commander in Chief. In the past few days, we have witnessed the spectacle of the President himself and his top advisers wading into allegations that Republicans are attempting to buy the election using foreign money laundered through the Chamber of Commerce, combining with Karl Rove and his wealthy backers to fund a flood of negative television commercials. Not only is this issue convoluted and far-fetched, but it also distracts from the issues voters care about, frustrating political insiders and alienating struggling citizens (not that many are following such an offbeat story line). Feinting and gibing can’t obscure those job numbers.
His entire life, Barack Obama was never held accountable for anything. His race, looks, and baritone pipes gave him a free pass on his prepared ascent up the American political ladder. He was his own gimmick, and so drowned in the role that he long since came to believe it, and believe himself entitled to all its perqs. He was carried all the way to the top of the mountain, the pinnacle of global power, where he was expected to do something that had never been asked of him before: produce results. No longer would race-baiting and speechifying and Alinskyizing be enough. And he has failed, miserably, and his cheering, idolatrous throngs are quietly melting away into the night.
Or, um, throwing the book at him:
I'm going to guess that the "overexuberant supporter" didn't realize the irony of that particular phrase.
UPDATE: Here's another juicy chunk of hypocrisy vis-a-vie demanding self-administered body cavity searches of The One's enemies that I should have caught.
But DON'T YOU DARE accuse the Obamunist Palace Guard of being "anti-business" - or you'll get the same.
