Not Loony Enough
I think that's why Juan Williams was fired at NPR. Well that, and as some are mentioning, the Head Loon George Soros' money. Think it's only a coincidence that Soros has recently infused NPR with $1.8 million, and now they've found a reason to fire Juan Williams? He's a liberal, no doubt, but he's not nearly as obnoxious as most liberal commentators, and his biggest sin in their eyes is his association with Fox News. They hate Fox because they can't stand the truth being told. It sure isn't happening in the State Run Media. Soros has vowed to fight the popularity of Fox News. Just think about the hue and cry if Rush Limbaugh decided to give Fox News $1 million.
JASmius adds: Or Roger Ailes gave Juan Williams two million bucks:
As National Public Radio weathered a storm of criticism Thursday for its decision to fire news analyst Juan Williams for his comments about Muslims, Fox News moved aggressively to turn the controversy to its advantage by signing Williams to an expanded role at the cable news network.
Fox News Chief Executive Roger Ailes handed Williams a new three-year contract Thursday morning, in a deal that amounts to nearly $2 million, a considerable bump up from his previous salary, the Tribune Washington Bureau has learned. The Fox News contributor will now appear exclusively and more frequently on the cable news network and have a regular column on FoxNews.com.
“Juan has been a staunch defender of liberal viewpoints since his tenure began at Fox News in 1997,” Ailes said in a statement, adding a jab at NPR: “He’s an honest man whose freedom of speech is protected by Fox News on a daily basis.”
This, my friends, is the epitome of "salt in the self-inflicted wound."
But the implications are even sweeter:
As described by Glenn Reynolds in a classic 2002 essay, a preference cascade occurs when people trapped inside a manufactured consensus suddenly realize that many other people share their doubts. Preference falsification works by making doubters feel isolated and alone. In a totalitarian society, the dissenter fears that if he speaks up, his will be a lone voice, easily squashed by the enforcers of the regime. When dissenters realize they are not alone, and the true strength of their numbers becomes apparent, “invincible” regimes vanish with astonishing speed.....
Getting fired from NPR when you’re a fixture on Fox is like Will Smith learning he’s been kicked out of his local dinner theater company. With a secure position, and considerable sympathy from conservatives who know all about the closing of the liberal mind, he’ll be in a perfect position to get those preference cascades rolling.
Exit quote from Princess Leia to Governor Tarkin: "The more you tighten your grip, [NPR], the more [minorities] will slip through your fingers."
