Senate GOP Adopts Earmark Ban

Dear Fellow Conservative: I have some very good news. Yesterday afternoon, Senate Republicans agreed to ban earmarks for the 112th Congress. The significance of this policy victory cannot be overstated. Now Senate Republicans will not be pressured to vote for budget-busting spending bills just to secure a little pork for their states. Now Senate Republicans will not be tempted to support federal programs that perform functions that should be left to states, local communities and individuals. Now Senate Republicans can focus on the big issues facing our country like real tax and entitlement reform. And now Senate Republicans can credibly fight President Obama and the Democrats in Congress on the issue of spending. We could not have won this victory without your support. We prevailed because of the courage demonstrated by the new Republicans you helped elect. If Pat Toomey, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and Ron Johnson had not won their races, we would have lost yesterday. These leaders not only provided critical votes, they also took an early public stand against earmarks which provided the momentum we needed to secure victory. This is why it's so important for freedom-loving Americans to fight for principled leaders. If we don't elect true conservatives who will stand up to the big spenders in both political parties, we'll never pull our country back from the fiscal cliff. Electing Republicans who don't have the courage of their convictions may be easier in some circumstances, but it won't save our country. Thank you for making the sacrifices necessary to strengthen the Senate. Thank you for standing with me in this critical fight for our nation's future. Respectfully, ![]() Jim DeMint United States Senator Chairman, Senate Conservatives Fund |
