Dirty Harry Blinked?
Once again I owe you a hearty "thank you."
News broke late last week that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid planned to file a "motion for cloture" which would have cut off debate and assured passage of the Police and Firefighter Monopoly Bargaining Bill (S. 3194).
Right to Work supporters immediately swung into action, blasting Capitol Hill with phone calls, emails, and faxes urging opposition to this dangerous legislation, which could ultimately force all police officers and firefighters nationwide under union boss control.
When Congress closed for the week Friday, Harry Reid had at least temporarily backed off from filing the motion to snuff out debate.
I am convinced your actions made the difference.
But I am very concerned he may move to enact his union boss power grab as soon as Congress returns Monday after Thanksgiving.
The key vote will be the "cloture" vote to cut off debate -- a vote that, as you know, requires 60 votes to pass. The vote-count is razor-thin, and union bosses are putting massive pressure on Senators to "give them" this vote.
Frankly, everyone on Capitol Hill knows that Big Labor has well over the 50 votes necessary to actually pass the bill if it comes to the floor for a final vote. The only question is: Can Right to Work forces hold 40 Senate votes to defend a filibuster, rally the American people, and stall the bill until the end of the "lame duck" Congress?
The union bosses are desperate for payback, and Harry Reid has given every indication that he intends to try to ram S. 3194 through the "lame duck" session before new pro-Right to Work Congressmen and Senators are seated in January.
The most dangerous phase of this battle against more forced unionism could start as early as next Monday.
That's why it's absolutely vital we keep up the pressure.
Please, sign your free fax authorization to your U.S. Senators insisting they oppose S. 3194 on all votes, including cloture.
Even if you've already signed a petition, please do so again. And please, forward the petition to friends, family, and other like-minded citizens. We must make sure our voices are heard.
We must express in no uncertain terms that this "lame duck" Congress does not represent the will of the American people.
Under the provisions of S. 3194, no matter what your state and local officials say, every police officer and firefighter in towns and cities across the whole country will ultimately be handed over to union boss control.
And if your town won't go along with that, the Federal Government will step in and turn over your first responders to Big Labor anyway.
And, of course, history shows us police and firefighter monopoly bargaining has all too often led to strikes.
This legislation could pit honest taxpayers like you against the very people you count on to protect you.
That's why it's vital you act today.
And after you've signed and forwarded the free fax authorization, please consider chipping in with a contribution of $10 or more today.
We must be prepared to ramp up our program at any time in the next few weeks to defeat S. 3194.
Your generous contribution today will help us reach even more committed activists.
I hope you'll act now.
Urgently,
Mark Mix
