Pushed Back, Pulling Forward
Congratulations! On Tuesday, Washington state voters pushed back against out of control government. We worked tirelessly during the last few months to inform voters about their options so they could make educated decisions when they voted.
Nearly two thirds of Washingtonians said loud and clear: “No new taxes!” Voters demanded that government live within its means, just like the rest of us. Three clear tax-related measures were on the ballot.
• Voters reinstated the 2/3 requirement for the legislature to raise taxes.
• Voters demolished the attempt to create a state income tax.
• Voters rolled back the legislature’s new taxes on food and bottled water.
Together, the election results show that most Washington voters believe government has enough—quite possibly too much—of our money.
Of course, as exciting as those results are, that was yesterday. What about tomorrow? What about the legislative session that will begin in January facing at least a $4.5 billion “revenue shortfall” (and those projections may still be overly optimistic).
Now is the time to push forward, with real solutions to the very real problems that we face as a state and nation. That is what the Evergreen Freedom Foundation and our Citizen Action Network are all about. It is why we exist: to provide sound policy solutions to policymakers and to empower citizens—that’s you—to hold those policymakers accountable.
Now more than ever—starting today—freedom-loving Washingtonians must stand together in defense of yesterday’s victories and in support of solutions that will balance the state budget, unleash our economy, and revive freedom for ourselves and our posterity.
For nearly twenty years we’ve been on the ground in Olympia working to advance freedom. We will be here for you as legislators in Olympia struggle to balance the budget, to help you take the next steps to hold elected officials accountable, and to provide common sense solutions.
You pushed back, and you won! Now stand with us and let’s begin to push forward!
