Don't Blame Tax Cuts for Catastrophic Deficits
By: Michael Medved

Liberal commentators blame the Bush tax cuts, not runaway spending, for the budget crisis.

They insist that slashing rates on income taxes, which means smaller percentages of private income going to government, would guarantee red ink even if Congress finds many billions in spending cuts.

The problem with this argument is that it's clearly contradicted by recent history. Actually, the second round of Bush tax cuts in 2003 brought increased revenues - both in actual dollar terms and as a percentage of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) -- not falling levels of government support. In 2007, six years after Bush began slashing tax rates, revenues rose above 18% of GDP -more than the 60 year post-war average.

Obamacare One Year Later - What It Means for Doctors is What it Means for You
By: Hal Scherz, MD

Twelve months after passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, all there is to show for it is that is has put the American healthcare system in jeopardy. Instead of providing a framework for the future, Obamacare has succeeded in creating chaos and uncertainty in the healthcare marketplace. Stuck in the middle are the physicians who have to watch helplessly as bureaucrats, who know precious little about what is involved in delivering quality care, tinker with issues sometimes concerning life and death.

Our system has its flaws, but when it comes to cancer treatment or the management of complex medical problems such as trauma or medical innovations, all other nations lag behind the United States.

CBO: Taxing mileage a 'practical option' for revenue enhancement
By: Pete Kasperowicz

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this week released a report that said taxing people based on how many miles they drive is a possible option for raising new revenues and that these taxes could be used to offset the costs of highway maintenance at a time when federal funds are short.

The report discussed the proposal in great detail, including the development of technology that would allow total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) to be tracked, reported and taxed, as well as the pros and cons of mandating the installation of this technology in all vehicles.

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico—This mountainside town is home to a picturesque cathedral, a tobacco museum and a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Another defining feature: Caguas's 00725 zip code has more people who receive a disability check than any other in the U.S.

Puerto Rico has emerged in recent years as one of the easiest places in the U.S. to get payments from the Social Security Disability Insurance program, created during the Eisenhower administration to help people who can't work because of a health problem.
