Freedom From Coast To Coast

The winds of freedom are blowing from coast to coast, even in places like Wisconsin where Big Labor has long dominated.

A Right to Work bill has passed the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and this week faces a vote in the State Senate Commerce Committee before moving on to the full body next week.

Last week, Ohio became the latest state to guarantee the Right to Work for government-sector workers.

Meanwhile, the battle in Wisconsin rages on as union lawyers turn to the courts to overturn duly-enacted legislation. I've included below an urgent email I sent to Right to Work supporters in Wisconsin on Saturday.

The union bosses are digging in with everything they've got.

Sincerely,

Mark Mix

Subject: Is Big Labor banking on JoAnne Kloppenburg?

On Tuesday, Wisconsin voters will elect one of seven justices to the state Supreme Court for a 10-year term.

With the election just days away, do you know where the candidates stand?

Of course, in a judicial election, it's hard to know. After all, judges are supposed to be independent arbiters of the law, and how judges will rule is often unpredictable.

That's why it's unusual for the National Right to Work Committee to lobby judicial candidates.

But now the union bosses are pouring their money into a multi-million dollar campaign to elect Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg.

In fact, as soon as the Wisconsin Legislature passed
Governor Scott Walker's government-sector monopoly bargaining reforms, "union rally organizers in Madison immediately switched to chanting Kloppenburg's name," reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Why?

Union lawyers are challenging Governor Walker's reforms in Wisconsin courts, and they see Kloppenburg as a Big Labor puppet on the state Supreme Court.

Kloppenburg has telegraphed her views, complaining to one Wisconsin paper a few weeks ago about "overreaching by the executive and legislative branches."

"What's happened in the last three weeks has brought that home," Kloppenburg continued.

What happened? Governor Walker introduced legislation guaranteeing most state and local employees the Right to Work and limiting the power of government-sector union bosses.

As you know, that legislation has since passed. Democrats who fled to Illinois were unable to block it. Big Labor's only option to protect its power is in the courts.

That's why they're going all-out for JoAnne Kloppenburg. And she seems more than willing to play the part.

In speeches, Kloppenburg has urged the union-label protesters in Madison to "save a little bit of energy" for her campaign.

American Federation of Teachers Local 212 union officials neatly summed it up in a letter to members: "A Kloppenburg victory would swing the balance to our side. A vote for [incumbent justice David] Prosser is a vote for Walker. It's time to get even."

The judicial branch isn't supposed to be about getting even. It's about applying the constitution.

Sincerely,

Mark Mix
