1. CBS's O'Donnell Contends Perry's Views on Global Warming and Social Security Make Him Unelectable
CBS’s Norah O’Donnell, filling in on Face the Nation, just couldn’t comprehend how a candidate espousing true conservative views could possibly capture the White House. Referring to Rick Perry, she demanded: “Can the Republican Party elect someone President who doesn't believe in global warming?” She described Perry’s fairly conventional conservative assessment of Social Security as “controversial,” citing how in his book he described the program as “a crumbling monument to the failure of the New Deal,” a “bad disease” and that “it was set up like a, quote ‘illegal Ponzi scheme.’” Repeating her earlier formulation, O’Donnell wondered: “Can you elect a Republican to the White House who thinks Social Security is a bad disease?”
2. In Midst of Obamamania Media Journalists Fret Obama Victim of the 'Worst PR Machine in History'
President Barack Obama continues to benefit from a fawning media of which past Presidents could only dream, yet on Sunday’s This Week two journalists fretted he’s not getting enough credit for his accomplishments, a lack of recognition they blamed on his staff’s poor public relations efforts. Since he’s taken office, FBN’s Liz Claman asserted, “almost every sector in the S&P is up double digit percentages” and “this is also the President under whom we got Osama bin Laden. Those two things are not getting him any gravitas at the moment.” So, she despaired, “whoever’s running PR for him needs to work on that part of it.” New York Times reporter Jeff Zeleny maintained the White House’s public relations shortcomings are “even breaking through to voters,” citing an Obama supporter in Illinois who “said he [Obama] must have the worst PR machine in history.” Zeleny recalled how he asked the man what he meant and “he said look at all of the good things he’s done and we haven't heard about it.”
3. Barbour Warns Perry: A Conservative, Christian, Southern Republican Like You Will Be 'Nitpicked' by Liberal Media
When NBC's Andrea Mitchell, on Friday, asked Haley Barbour if Rick Perry had to "clean up his language?" the former head of the RNC brushed back the host of MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports by subtly accusing her of engaging in typical liberal media tricks. The current Mississippi governor warned his fellow Republican to be prepared to be "nitpicked by the liberal media elite" because "when you are a conservative, Christian Southerner, Republican, you have to expect that."
4. NBC Spins for Obama Vacation: 'When Is There Ever a Good Time for a World Leader' to Take a Trip?'
NBC on Friday offered a light-hearted defense of Barack Obama's vacation, justifying it by pointing out how hard it is for world leaders to take trips. On Today, NBC's Savannah Guthrie implored, "Well, is there ever a good time for a world leader to take a vacation? President Obama is receiving some criticism for his summer getaway to Martha's Vineyard and he's not the only one."
5. USA Today's Neuharth Slams Newsweek as 'Inaccurate and Unfair Left-Wing Propaganda Machine'
Prompted by Newsweek’s Michele Bachmann cover picture choice, in his weekly Friday column, USA Today founder Al Neuharth, a pretty consistent liberal, recognized the magazine’s political agenda. “When Newsweek was owned by the Washington Post, it was predictably left-wing, but it was accurate,” Neuharth observed before slamming the new owner/editor who picked a picture to make Bachmann look crazy: “Under Tina Brown, it is an inaccurate and unfair left-wing propaganda machine.”
6. Actress/Singer Alicia Witt Sticks with Obama Who Gave Her 'Passion' for America
Actress/singer Alicia Witt, who came to semi-fame playing Cybill Shepherd’s teenage daughter “Zoey” on the late 1990s CBS sit-com Cybill, traveled to Washington, DC this past week, which she told the Washington Examiner was her first visit to the nation’s capital since “President Obama’s inauguration, which she says made her feel more patriotic than she ever has in her life.” That gave her a “passion” for the U.S. and it “still gives me chills even though the darkness has sort of overcome our country again.” The paper’s August 18 “Yeas & Nays” item, “Witt performs at W, votes for O,” quoted her as saying “I would vote for Obama over Romney, but I think there are worse candidates over Romney.”
