North Africa may not come to mind immediately when one thinks of the threat of Radical Islam. However, an increasing number of violent jihadist militias have seized power in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, including Al Qaeda that have seized control of Libya , al- Shabaab who are fighting for the control of Somalia, or Nigeria's Boko Haram. In this week's newsletter, Clarion Fund's Senior Fellow Clare M. Lopez takes a closer look at the disturbing violence that is taking hold in Nigeria.

Boko Haram Wants to Put Nigeria Under Islamic Law

by Clare M. Lopez

The armies of Islam arrived in the Nigerian kingdoms as early as the 9th century. The forcible conquest of North Africa--including present day Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco--imposed Islamic law (shariah) according to the Maliki school of Sunni jurisprudence over this vast swath of territory. Over subsequent centuries, relentless jihadist raids (razzias) as well as the penetration of Muslim merchants, scholars, and traders into areas of the Sahel and sub-Saharan Africa eventually succeeded in subjugating Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and the entire northern half of the modern country of Nigeria to Islam.

Today, Nigeria is a large and populous West African country of some 160 million people, about half of whom are Muslim and half Christian and animist. Nigeria is comprised of 36 states, 12 of which have implemented shariah in the northern half of the country. As the renowned political scientist, Samuel Huntington wrote, "Islam's borders are bloody and so are its innards." Islam in Nigeria, as in every other place on earth where it establishes power, has shown itself aggressive and violent.  [MORE]

Libya Turned Back the Clock on Human Rights
to the 7th Century

by Clare M. Lopez

Libyan Transitional National Council (TNC) leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil announced in mid-October 2011 that Islamic law (shariah) will be the basis for all future legislation in the country. The black flag of  al-Qa'eda and jihad now flies over the courthouse in Benghazi, the town where the first sparks of the Libyan revolution ignited. The men with the guns come from the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), a jihadist group accepted into the ranks of al-Qa'eda franchises in 2007 personally by Ayman al-Zawahiri. Abdul-Hakim Belhaj, the former LIFG commander who holds a university degree in civil engineering and who fought alongside the mujahedeen in Afghanistan in the 1980s and later returned there in the 1990s to join the Taliban, is the top rebel military commander in the country, with his headquarters in Tripoli.  [MORE]

Gaffney: Rise of Sharia Law Will Bring War to the Middle East

Monday, 24 Oct 2011 06:56 PM

By Martin Gould and Kathleen Walter

War is on its way in the Middle East as Muslim countries are determined to force a showdown over the future of Israel, Ronald Reagan's assistant defense secretary Frank Gaffney warned in an exclusive Newsmax.TV interview."I'm afraid there's a war coming, a very serious, perhaps cataclysmic regional war," he said. "It will be presumably over, at least in part, the future existence of the state of Israel. It may involve all of its neighbors, as they have in the past, attacking Israel to try, as they say, to drive the Jews into the sea.

"It may involve NUCLEAR weapons," Gaffney predicted. "But whatever form it takes and whenever it occurs, it is unlikely to be contained to that region,  and we must do everything we can to prevent freedom's enemies from thinking they have an opportunity to engage in that kind of warfare."

That means standing "absolutely, unmistakably" as one WITH Israel and doing EVERYTHING to prevent Iran from getting its hands on NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

Gaffney, who now heads up the nonprofit Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C., was speaking on the day that the "moderate" Islamist party Ennahda claimed victory at the ballot box in Tunisia and the day after Libya's new rulers declared that country WILL BE run on Islamic Principles and UNDER SHARIA LAW.

Folks, for several decades even Hollywood has said the end of the world is coming. Movies like "Deep Impact", "Armageddon", "Independence Day", "The Day The Earth Stood Still", "The Day After Tomorrow", The Terminator movies...R.E.M. had a hit years back "It's the End of The World as We Know It"...

For those not "keeping score" let me recount some of the major moves and happenings recently:

1. Russia invades Georgia, which is just north of Turkey, and is still there.
2. We are still in the throes of a War AGAINST Global Islamic Jihad that we've been fighting since 2001- that they've been fighting since 632 A.D.!
3. Iran has several times threatened/promised to NUKE ISRAEL AND THE U.S. !
4. Iran IS working with Russia, China, N. Korea, & Pakistan to get Nuclear WMD's- if they don't ALREADY HAVE THEM.
5. Iran sends its navy over just off OUR Coasts and they HAVE LONG RANGE MISSILES!
6. Egypt & Libya fall to EXTREME, MILITANT Islamist groups, (are there any other kind?!)
7. Libya "loses" 20,000 hand held MISSILES!! 20,000 OF THEM!!
8. Russia has "lost" some 54-57 SUIT-CASE NUKES!!
9. Obama calls for Israel to go BACK TO it's PRE-1967 boundaries.
10. Obama, the U.N. and even Fox News refer to Jerusalem as "Jewish Occupied Territory"!!! (DUH! It's the 4,000 year old CAPITAL OF ISRAEL!!!)
11. WE HAVE OPEN BORDERS AND SOME 30,000 MUSLEMS A YEAR CRIMINALLY INVADE SOVEREIGN U.S. SOIL!!!

Townhall.com's Washington Beat

October 25, 2011

In this edition of the Washington Beat, a Soviet born man confronts Occupy Wall Street.

CAIN STILL THE FRONT MAN
Despite being under the microscope for his 9-9-9 plan in recent weeks, business man Herman Cain is still
topping the polls and is currently beating Mitt Romney in the latest from CBS/New York Times. The poll, taken after Cain was heavily attacked during a GOP debate in Las Vegas, shows Cain beating Romney 25 percent to 21 percent and also showed Cain has solidified the tea party vote, bringing in 32 percent in that voting block. Many establishment pundits had written off Cain before he was even a presidential candidate and continue to write him off, however his support in both the tea party and Republican branches of the party solidify his seriousness as a candidate. Cain has polled in the top two positions consistently for the past three weeks.

OCCUPY WALL STREET CONTINUES
The protest of the "1 percent" continues not only on Wall Street but all over the country. Violence at the protests has become prevalent as multiple rapes have been reported to authorities and a "riot equipment" box filled with large rocks and bricks
was found at the site of Occupy Minneapolis. At this point over 800 people have been arrested and crime rates in New York City are up in rough neighborhoods as specialize crime units have been relocated to control occupiers rather than serve in violent neighborhoods. The American Nazi party and the Council on American Islamic Relations, an organization with terrorist ties, have expressed full support for the occupy movement, which explains the grotesque prevalence of anti-Semitism at the rallies. Meanwhile, President Obama still hasn't condemned the Occupy Wall Street movement, in fact he has expressed sympathy for those involved.

ARIZONA SHERIFF LAUNCES EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE FOR CONGRESS
National Sheriff of the Year and Arizona Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has formed a Congressional exploratory committee for Arizona Congressional District 4. In his announcement statement, Babeu declared "Washington is broken," and that to fix it, "we need leaders unafraid to make tough decisions." Babeu may just be the man for the job. He has been on the front lines in the fight against illegal immigration as Pinal County sees more human and drug trafficking than any other sector along U.S.-Mexico border. If Babeu takes the leap from exploratory to filing for Congress, he will be deeply missed as a Sheriff, but would make a substantial difference in Congress. He would be a great addition to the House Homeland Security Committee.

PERRY FINALLY REVEALS ECONOMIC PLAN
Texas Governor Rick Perry has finally
submitted an economic tax plan that gives Americans a choice: keeping their current income tax rate or accept a 20 percent flat tax. Perry proclaimed in the Wall Street Journal his plan would allow Americans to file their taxes on a postcard, saving the half a trillion dollars filers spend each year simply complying with the current code. The plan would also give young people the option of opting out of Social Security. Perry claims his plan will jumpstart America's global competitiveness by making it less expensive for businesses to operate in America. Perry's plan reflects similar policies he implemented in Texas, which in the past three years has led to more job creation in the Lone Star State than all other states in the country combined.

GADHAFI FINALLY DEAD
After months of United States, I mean, NATO resources being allocated to "rebels" in Libya, dictator Muammar Gadhafi is
dead. After his bunker was hit in a U.S. drone strike, Gadhafi was shot in the head by a rebel. Rebel forces have now declared the civil war over, have said Libya has been liberated and want Sharia law to be implemented as the law of the land as soon as possible.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Vice President Joe Biden trying to sell President Obama's latest stimulus package:

"It's not temporary when that 911 call comes in and a woman's being raped if a cop shows up in time to prevent the rape, it's not temporary to that woman," Biden said. "I wish these guys that thought it was temporary, I wish they had some notion what it's like to be on the other side of a gun or a 200 pound man standing over you telling you to submit. Folks, it matters. It matters!"

Mitt Romney said, "It's about time ... Moammar Gadhafi was a tyrant who terrorized the Libyan people and shed American blood, and the world is a better place without him." Marco Rubio weighed in with, "... justice has been done today." Meanwhile, the reports of exactly how Gadhafi died are, in the words of one network, "conflicting."

The one constant in the accounts I have read is that when he was captured he was alive. A few minutes later, he was not. Therein lies my problem.

I will not defend or condone Gadhafi's life or actions. They are indefensible. He was a murderer and a tyrant. None of that is in question. What is in question seems to be the issue of  what we do with captured tyrants.

If Gadhafi were killed in a shootout like Saddam Hussein's sons, I would have no problem. If we locate him in a training camp and obliterate it with a missile, I would have no problem either. Those are legitimate actions in a war zone and are morally and intellectually defensible.

However, when we found Saddam Hussein, a man just as evil as his sons or Gadhafi, hiding in a hole in Tikrit we did things a little differently. Because regardless of the lawless scum we were hunting, it was Americans doing the hunting.

The scenarios are eerily similar. Both men were found in makeshift hidey-holes. Both had members of an entourage or security detail with them. Both were discovered by a group of hundreds of their enemies, all armed to the teeth. Both were found shaken or disoriented. Both were taken alive.

The difference? Hussein was captured by American soldiers. Gadhafi was captured by Muslim insurgents. Hussein got three hots and a cot for a few months, was tried, convicted and executed. Gadhafi was promptly murdered by his captors. This act is now celebrated by GOP politicians as justice and overdue justice, at that.

When did I wake up in Bizarro World? I thought I lived in America. I thought we believed all men are created equal and none may be deprived of life without due process. As frustrating as it is, I thought mine was the nation ridiculed for wounding a criminal in a police chase, spending thousands of tax dollars to heal him, jail him and try him and execute him if he is found guilty. Because taking a man's life - any man's life - is the ultimate in serious.

Last month we had yet another national discussion on Capitol Punishment around the execution of Troy Davis. Several witnesses recanted their testimony and we again agonized over the ultimate punishment. Because we are Americans.

So I am disturbed when a man surrenders or is captured and it appears probable he was murdered by those who held him. That is not how we do things in America.

In the end, however, it is more disturbing that two of the most powerful and respected men in American government - Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney - find nothing wrong with the events as they transpired. Or, if you will, are unable to refrain from offering their approval of events the nature of which they do not fully know.

Perhaps such behavior is good politics. But if I have learned anything as an activist, it is that good politics breed bad realities!

The men who murdered Gadhafi do not share our values, our principles or our view of Life and the worth of every man. We may have stood alongside them as they fought a vicious strongman. But we ought to distance ourselves from them. We ought to roundly condemn them. They are as much animals as the man they murdered and by murdering him have earned our contempt and disgust.

The first act of the post-Gadhafi Libya was not to show a watching world they were ready to join it as civilized men. It was not to demonstrate that the freedom from tyranny they have publicly cried out for truly burned in their hearts. It was not to side with an American President who sent aid because their oppressor cruelly treated them in their helplessness.

They showed they were replacing Gadhafi's tyranny with their own. They showed they pursued mere liberation instead of yearning for true Liberty.

And there are Americans who celebrate this?  Words fail ...

By Martin Gould and Ashley Martella

The death of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi could create a vacuum that a whole new slew of Islamic terrorists and would-be despots seek to fill, says award-winning journalist Arnaud de Borchgrave in an exclusive Newsmax.TV interview.

"One very disturbing element is the fact that a former al-Qaida terrorist by the name of Abdul Hakim Belhadj, who the CIA renditioned into Thailand where he was tortured, is now back in his original stomping ground.

"Libya is where he was head of al-Qaida underground. Now he's above ground and commander of the Tripoli garrison."

Belhadj is the former leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG). As an engineering student in Tripoli he was opposed to the Gadhafi regime and was attracted to political Islam.

SIRTE, Libya | Thu Oct 20, 2011 10:03am EDT

SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) - Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds suffered on Thursday as fighters battling to complete an eight-month-old uprising against his rule overran his hometown Sirte, Libya's interim rulers said.

His killing, which came swiftly after his capture near Sirte, is the most dramatic single development in the Arab Spring revolts that have unseated rulers in Egypt and Tunisia and threatened the grip on power of the leaders of Syria and Yemen.

Here we go (via Ace):

Jihadists among the Libyan rebels revealed plans last week on the Internet to subvert the post-Moammar Gadhafi government and create an Islamist state, according to U.S. intelligence agencies.

U.S. officials said spy agencies are stepping up surveillance of Islamist-oriented elements among Libyan rebels. A government report circulated Tuesday said extremists were observed "strategizing" on Internet forums about how to set up an Islamist state in Libya after the regime of Col. Gadhafi is defeated.

"Several forum participants have suggested that, following a transitional stage, the battle should turn against secularist rebels and members of the [rebels'] Transitional National Council," the unclassified report stated.

Gee, sounds a lot like the other "Arab spring" revolution in next-door Egypt, doesn't it?  Also sounds like something everybody other than President Stuttering Clusterbleep Of A Miserable Failure could have and did see coming from parsecs away.

Unless, of course, this latest advance of the Global Caliphate was precisely what he was seeking all along.

1. New Evidence Debunks Manmade Global Warming

New research from one of the world's most prestigious scientific organizations indicates that cosmic rays and the sun -- not manmade carbon emissions -- are the major factors influencing global climate.

"The science is now all-but-settled on global warming, convincing new evidence demonstrates, but Al Gore, the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) and other global warming doomsayers won't be celebrating," writes Lawrence Solomon, executive director of Energy Probe, in Canada's Financial Post.

"The new findings point to cosmic rays and the sun -- not human activities -- as the dominant controller of climate on Earth."

The findings, published in the journal Nature, come from CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, one of the world's largest centers for scientific research involving 60 countries and 8,000 scientists at more than 600 universities and national laboratories, according to Solomon.

CERN -- the organization that invented the World Wide Web -- built a stainless steel chamber that precisely re-created the Earth's atmosphere.

"In this chamber, 63 CERN scientists from 17 European and American institutes have done what global warming doomsayers said could never be done -- demonstrate that cosmic rays promote the formation of molecules that in Earth's atmosphere can grow and seed clouds." And the cloudier it is, the cooler it will be, Solomon notes.

"Because the sun's magnetic field controls how many cosmic rays reach Earth's atmosphere (the stronger the sun's magnetic field, the more it shields Earth from incoming cosmic rays from space), the sun determines the temperature on Earth."

So when the sun's magnetic field is strongest, fewer cosmic rays impact the Earth, which in turn leads to decreased cloud formation and warmer temperatures.

The link between cosmic rays and global warming was first proposed by two Danish scientists in 1996, and was immediately denounced by the IPCC.

But CERN scientist Jasper Kirkby, a British experimental physicist, accepted the Danes' theory. He told the scientific press in 1998 that it "will probably be able to account for somewhere between half and the whole of the increase in the Earth's temperature that we have seen in the last century."

It took Kirkby nearly 10 years to convince the CERN bureaucracy to proceed with his plan to create the chamber that replicates the Earth's atmosphere and has produced the recent results.

But CERN "remains too afraid of offending its government masters to admit its success," observes Solomon, author of "The Deniers: The World-Renowned Scientists Who Stood Up Against Global Warming Hysteria, Political Persecution, and Fraud."

CERN told Kirkby and his team to downplay the results by stating "that cosmic radiation is only one of many parameters."

Solomon concludes: "CERN, and the Danes, have in all likelihood found the path to the Holy Grail of climate science. But the religion of climate science won't yet permit a celebration of the find."

2. Libyans Claim Gadhafi Lied About Daughter's Death

Moammar Gadhafi sought to drum up sympathy when he announced that his adopted baby daughter Hana was killed in a 1986 American airstrike, and even organized an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of her death.

But sources in Libya are now saying that Gadhafi lied about Hana's death and she is still alive.

The airstrike targeted Gadhafi's home in Tripoli in retaliation for the Libyan-sponsored bombing of a Berlin nightclub that killed two American servicemen earlier in 1986.

After the strike Gadhafi showed journalists a picture of a dead baby and claimed it was Hana. And some investigators probing the 1988 Lockerbie airliner bombing theorized that Gadhafi had ordered it to avenge her death.

But after Libyan rebels recently seized Tripoli, a hospital official told The Associated Press that Hana worked for him as a surgeon before the rebels came to the city.

"She was very tense and nervous as soon as the revolution started," said Gassem Baruni, head of the Tripoli Medical Center.

He said he used Hana's influence to secure supplies for the hospital, telling Hana he needed them to treat Gadhafi's troops when in fact he was helping the rebels' cause.

On Tuesday, Swiss officials disclosed that Hana's name had briefly appeared earlier this year on a Swiss government document listing senior Libyan officials targeted for sanctions.

Adel Shaltut, a Libyan diplomat at the United Nations in Geneva, said it was common knowledge that Hana wasn't killed in the airstrike.

"All Libyans knew from the very beginning that it's a lie," he told AP, claiming Hana was married and had children.

And Mohammed Ammar, a Tripoli resident, said his cousin graduated with Hana from medical school last year.

Adding to the mystery, however, some Libyans say they believe that after Hana's death in the airstrike, Gadhafi adopted another daughter and gave her the same name as a memorial to the first Hana.

Hana's current whereabouts, if she is indeed alive, are unknown. Her mother, sister Aisha and two brothers fled to Algeria on Monday, with their spouses and children, and she was not listed among those who had left the country.

3. After 2 DUIs, Cheney Feared a 'Bad End'

Former Vice President Dick Cheney says he arrived at a turning point in his life when he woke up in jail with a hangover after his second drunk driving arrest in a year.

The night in jail came after 22-year-old Cheney was busted in Rock Springs, Wyo., in July 1963. He had been arrested in Cheyenne, Wyo., in November 1962 for "operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and drunkenness."

The first arrest resulted in a 30-day suspension of his driver's license and forfeiture of $150 bail, The Smoking Sun website disclosed. The second case ended when Cheney paid a $100 fine.

Cheney writes in his newly released memoir "In My Time" that after work building electrical transmission lines, he would "spend considerable time in one of the local bars" where he and his fellow workers "consumed vast quantities of beer" and "if something stronger was called for," bourbon.

The beer and bourbon combination "helps explain how I managed to get arrested twice within a year for driving under the influence," Cheney recalls.

After the second arrest, Cheney said he realized that "if I didn't fundamentally change my ways, I was going to come to a bad end."

Cheney spent several hours reflecting on the "self-destructive path I was on," then moved out of the apartment he shared with a drinking buddy, telling him: "I'm going to make something of my life."

Cheney went on to compile a resume that includes U.S. congressman, White House chief of staff, secretary of defense, corporate CEO, and vice president.

4. Renewable Energy Subsidies a 'Massive Money Sink'

Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power are heavily dependent on government subsidies yet contribute little to America's domestic energy production, according to a new report.

The report from the Energy Information Administration, the Department of Energy's research arm, reveals that the federal government gave out $37.2 billion in direct energy subsidies in 2010, an increase of more than $19 billion over 2007.

"This 50 percent increase from three years ago confirms that federal energy favors are part of our out-of-control spending problem," Robert L. Bradley, Jr., the CEO and founder of the Institute for Energy Research, writes in Forbes.

Of the $19 billion increase, additional subsidies for renewable energy sources amounted to more than $9 billion, a 186 percent increase. Subsidies for renewables now total more than $14 billion.

Wind power was a major recipient of federal energy funds, taking in nearly $5 billion in subsidies last year -- a more than tenfold rise from 2007. Solar energy rose to $1.13 billion, and biofuels (ethanol) rose to $6.6 billion.

"Funneling money into renewables is certainly politically popular," Bradley observes.

"But at the end of the day, someone ought to ask: What exactly do green firms have to show for all that money? And the truth is: Not much."

Wind power today represents just 1.2 percent of total domestic energy production, despite the billions of dollars in subsidies.

"The reality is that, up to this point, renewable energy has been a massive money sink," according to Bradley, author of the book "Edison to Enron: Energy Markets and Political Strategies."

"Green energy is all red when it comes to consumers and taxpayers."

Robert Bryce, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, also pointed out the shortcomings of wind power in an article for National Review Online.

He noted that Texas has more than 10,000 megawatts of wind-generation capacity, yet during a particularly hot four-day period, the state's wind turbines produced no more than 2 percent of the total power demand even though their capacity is to produce nearly 15 percent.

That's because of a "dirty little secret," according to Bryce: "When power demand is highest, wind energy's output is generally low. The reverse is also true: Wind-energy production is usually highest during the middle of the night, when electricity use is lowest."

Bradley concludes: "If wind or solar or biofuels truly represent a revolution in American energy, that's great -- but let them compete on the open market. If these sectors can pump out low-cost, efficient energy, customers can be trusted to buy it."

5. Chinese Workers Tops at Faking Sick Days

In a surprising disclosure, a new global survey on employee absenteeism reveals that the country where workers are most likely to call in sick when they aren't is China.

The survey by The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated -- a leading workforce management firm -- found that 71 percent of employees in China admit to calling in sick when they are not actually ill.

France had the smallest number, 16 percent, while the United States had 52 percent. Other nations in the survey were India (62 percent), Australia (58 percent), Canada (52 percent), the U.K (43 percent), and Mexico (38 percent).

When respondents were asked why they had taken a day off and falsely claimed they were sick, the overwhelming response in every country was that workers felt "stressed/needed a day off."

Other reasons include the need to take care of a sick child and not having enough paid leave.

Most respondents in the survey -- conducted by Harris Interactive -- said they spent their "sick" day in bed or watching television; workers in India and Mexico said they also spent time meeting with friends or relatives.

Nearly half of Chinese workers surveyed, 45 percent, said that providing more paid time off to employees would discourage taking days off with a feigned illness; 34 percent of Americans and just 12 percent of Mexicans agreed.

Employees in every country said given the opportunity to work from home and the option of taking unpaid leave would also discourage bogus sick days.

"This survey provides a fascinating look at the issue of absenteeism around the world," said Joyce Maroney, director of The Workforce Institute.

"It is interesting to see both the many similarities between regions and the marked differences."

"Within 25 years, our goal is to give 80 percent of Americans access to high-speed rail," President Obama declared in his State of the Union address, making it the most ambitious element of his vision for "winning the future."

Invoking national pride, Obama mused that "America is the nation that built the transcontinental railroad, brought electricity to rural communities, constructed the interstate highway system." Sadly, he lamented, the U.S. now lags behind Europe, Russia, and China in modern transportation infrastructure.
